Illustration for a book cover. 8 hours in Photoshop.

EDIT: worked on it for a few more hours, fixed shading on the armour, explosion and fire, added the gun and hand.

Well - I know the problem of time very well..All these damn matters of client/print/deadline.
But still I'll write you some crits on this - even if you're aware of the picture's flows by yourself - maybe it will help you further
First and most disturbing - his helmet doesn't reflect the red background at all,and in case of such a texture as metal - it looks too unnatural
Second is the smoke - just find some pictures of explosions and you will see how it works.
Clouds - I won't judge hard cause I always thought that clouds is a good excuse for artist to go crazy with his technique. I lack some mass at your clouds - they look a bit flat
I like his face - good work with the skintones
Nice helmet design. Good composition
Good job. Keep it up
